GREENFIELD, Ind. (Jan. 10, 2025) – The Community Foundation of Hancock County (CFHC) is pleased to announce a community leader joining the Board of Directors in 2025.

Dr. George Philhower is the Eastern Hancock Schools Superintendent, a position he has held since July 2021. Prior to his appointment at Eastern Hancock, Dr. Philhower served as Western Wayne’s School District Superintendent for two years and other administrative capacities for a total of 13 years in that school district.

While at Western Wayne, Dr. Philhower led the creation of advanced education programs and an on-campus daycare in partnership with the YMCA and the Sugar Creek Parking Company. Additionally, he led the school district through the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Philhower earned his Ed.S. in School Administration in May 2015 and his Doctor of Philosophy – PhD in Educational Leadership and Administration in May 2017. Both degrees were obtained from Indiana State University. He also holds a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership and Administration from the University of Indianapolis, and an undergraduate degree in Education/Teaching of Individuals in Elementary Special Education Programs from Cardinal Stritch University. Lastly, he secured a Leadership Coaching certification from Harvard University.

Dr. Philhower co-authored an article, “A new pathway to success for Indiana’s students” published in the Indiana Capital Chronical in Dec. 2024. The article focuses on pathways in addition to traditional college or training after high school, and the program in modeled after a Swiss system called iLab.

Dr. Philhower lives in Greenfield with his wife Taylor and two children, Ryleigh and Elijah.
