FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New Emergency Signs to enhance safety on Hancock County Trails

GREENFIELD, Ind. — January 27, 2026

Hancock County trail users will soon see new safety enhancements along local trailways. Six‑inch circular red signs with white lettering will be installed throughout the trail system. Each sign includes a unique location code designed to help emergency responders quickly and accurately identify a caller’s position in the event of an emergency.

The initiative is the result of ongoing collaboration convened quarterly by the Community Foundation of Hancock County. This working group brings together municipalities, trail supporters, and other key stakeholders. Emergency trail signage has been a recurring topic of discussion since 2024 as partners explored ways to strengthen public safety across the county’s trail network.

“We worked with stakeholders like Hancock County 911 and Hancock County GIS staff to gather input, feedback, and essential data,” said Cumberland Town Manager Ben Lipps, who has participated in the collaborative effort “Hancock County 911 Director of Communications John Jokantas had implemented an emergency response program in northern Indiana which was helpful to our efforts.”

The signs were funded by the Community Foundation of Hancock County, Hancock Flat 50, and Hancock Wellness Centers.
